Hibris 01 is the development of Luiza’s live performance, presented earlier this year as part of the exhibition fragility of being at DAS WEISSE HAUS. In collaboration with Francesca Hirschl, Allegra Kortlang, and Rodrigo Torres Plata, the artist combines poetry and dance to address urban material archives as repositories of living memory. The video is a patchwork of process images and movement improvisations in dialogue with the space’s architecture.
In reference to her sculpture on view, Weaving Spinal Voids, Furtado further explores notions of care within materialities and the hybrid encounters between biotic and abiotic realms. She narrates fictions of embeddedness while moving with the image of an expanded spine. Her work incorporates leftover metal pipe holders - materials from previous installations within the building - which she reuses as costume elements.
The soft sculpture she wears and activates in space morphs throughout the piece, from a prosthetic representation of a spine to a tail. The choreography delves into the imagery of joint rotations through walking, folding, and circling - gestures used to stage her perceptions on resonance and the collective associations that a body can thread within a room in the context of performance.
Through aesthetics of pixelation and experimental overlays of moving images, the artist blurs the boundaries between her own body and the core elements of her site-specific sculpture, combined with a 3D model in an “expanded view,” as seen in design representation. Puzzling with these elements allows Luiza to embody and share insight into her research on industrial remnants of urban scenarios - as absorbing layers and beholders of processual information in times of ecological crisis.
